    Introducing: Thoroughly Manly Musicals

So I'm extremely psyched to show off the latest addition to the Crosstawk family: Stan Ferguson's Thoroughly Manly Musicals. With each iteration, Stan's going to be tackling a different outing in musical theater, be it good or bad. With the introductory episode, the topic of discussion's going to be RENT, directed by Chris Columbus, adapted from the stage play by Jonathan Larson.

Enough of me squaking, though - let's get to the show:

That movie looks absolutely horrible. You didn't even mention the fact that (as far as I can tell from the clips), most of the actors are poor singers and the music is over-the-top Broadway bullshit. Admittedly, I am anti-musical in most cases, but what you've shown of Rent is basically everything I despise about the genre distilled into one giant, steaming turd.

Are you planning to cover any good musicals? There aren't many I can tolerate, but Once and The Sound of Music are up there.

Oh there will be good ones. I fully intend to cover ones that I like. But this is a comedy show so even with the good ones there will be some jokes made at their expense.

And if you think Rent is bad, wait til I get to Mama Mia.

Okay, I am a fan of this musical, but I'll admit it does have it's flaws. However, as a fan, I must make the obligatory FUCK YOU!! Ahem, now that that's out of the way, I'm going to say a couple things just to inform you. The song 'Rent' talks about how the only thing they've ever wanted to do and are even good at (i.e. Filmmaking and Song-writing). The "list" that is La Vie Boheme is a in fact supposed to be a list, more specifically, a list of this not thought of as "socially acceptable", things that are shunned. Bohemia is supposed to be the land made for outcasts and misfits, so this list in a way is there way of saying, "Fuck you society, no matter how much you try to destroy us, you can't, because these are our people." Yes, I am fully aware i just called a dildo a person, but I assume you get my point. This isn't so much a musical with a straightforward plot as it is a way of showing the audience that things that are different (gays) or not "socially acceptable" (pretty much every word of Le Vie Boheme) aren't bad and they need to embraced. No, I am not telling you to go embrace a dildo, it's just a metaphor. This post isn't meant to change your opinion, just to inform you on some things that I felt you didn't pick up on. Excellent review, even though I disagree. Excellent video, as I hope to see more. And, I'd advertise my movie reviews here, but that would be wrong. (Lol, click my name if you really want to see) Haha. See you on your next video - R. L. King

Very funny review. My only complaint is your voice is a bit muddily mixed and I had to strain to hear what you were saying at times. But I definitely agree with your points. Remember, kids, deadbeatism is noble.

Very funny. I have never seen Rent, and now I am glad. I do agree it is a bit difficult to hear you at times, though. Nice job!
