    Discover Music Project: Episode 36

Our gracious host Karl Castaneda returns to DMP to showcase one of his all-time favorite bands, The Velvet Underground. This is easily one of the most influential rock bands of all time, thanks to Lou Reed's odd songwriting choices and the band's eclectic brand of psychadelia. You can hear elements of Velvet Underground music in artists as diverse as The Ramones, Neil Young, Phish, and Wilco. (Hey, we've also done episodes on all those guys!) Karl is a big fan, and you might be too after hearing these songs:

    1. I'm Waiting for the Man (The Velvet Underground & Nico)

    2. Venus in Furs (The Velvet Underground & Nico)

    3. Heroin (The Velvet Underground & Nico)

    4. Lady Godiva's Operation (White Light / White Heat)

    5. Here She Comes Now (White Light / White Heat)

    6. Pale Blue Eyes (The Velvet Underground)

    7. After Hours (The Velvet Underground)

    8. Rock & Roll [Alternate Mix] (Fully Loaded)

    9. Sweet Jane (Loaded)

    10. Oh! Sweet Nuthin' (Loaded)

    Encore:

Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed (Transformer)

Thanks! Big up, John Cale and the Theatre of Eternal Music...

When i listen to your podcast I'm always thinking about what other musicians would be great subjects for it. Phillip Glass celebrated his 75 birthday yesterday... He would be great fodder for discovery.... perhaps? Alice Coltrane as well.... Good day and thanks for the show...

check out Angus Maclise..... He was the original VU percussionist who also made some incredible music/art... He's somewhat of a forgotten figure. He had a pretty nice retrospective done about him in NYC recently.. Didn't get to experience it sadly.

Thanks for the comments! I would LOVE to do a Philip Glass show, and it would be a great choice for Evan if I can ever get him on DMP. I'm filing this one away for the right opportunity...
